This Thursday Luhring Augustine presents First Pictures, an exhibition of Joel Sternfeld’s early color photographs.  Four distinct bodies of work made between 1971 and 1980, the majority of which have never before been published or exhibited, demonstrate the conceptual and formal strategies fundamental to the artist’s practice over the ensuing four decades.  The entire work has been compiled in a book of same title recently published by Steidl that includes an excellent essay by Jessica May.  Checkout Geroen Wetzel and Jorg Adolph’s 2010 documentary, How to Make a Book with Steidl, which features an appearance by Sternfeld.
