The Signing by Renée Cox, is an interpretation of Howard Chandler Christy’s historical painting, Scene at The Signing of the Constitution of the United States, which was commissioned by Congress in 1939 to honor the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution.
Cox offers a contemporary look at one of America’s most historic events by portraying modern-day women and men of color in the place of the Founding Fathers.
Across her practice, Cox has returned to the images through which histories, identities, and cultural narratives are constructed, placing Black figures within pictorial traditions from which they have historically been excluded. The photograph features friends and family of Renée, former models, artists and fashion designers.
Each of the 3 panels were printed using our SwissQ UV printer, braced and seamed so that each panel lines up exactly to the next, producing one continuous image. Once installed, the piece is 15 feet long and approximately 5 feet tall.
