Todd Murphy (1962-2020) is an American experimental artist known for his immersive environments and works that range from monumental scale to everyday curiosities.
The artist’s second solo exhibition presented by Johnson Lowe Gallery titled Voyager includes a collection of works produced in collaboration with Murphy’s estate and Laumont’s UV printing department.
Recurring motifs of boats, garments, birds and botanical structures take on historical meanings and carry memories by combining his knack of gathering and piecing together different elements of the physical world. The majority of the works produced by Laumont for Voyager are UV printed directly to the surface of Dibond and thin painted aluminum panels. Pictured below are two separate prints presented together as a diptych. The top print titled Starry Night Sky is UV printed direct to a thin white aluminum, and the bottom print titled Cotton is UV printed direct to Dibond, both with an aluminum tube brace mounted to the back for a contemporary display.
The most unique pieces produced by Laumont are Husk Dress and Untitled (Blue Regatta Murmurations Dress) also pictured below. The unique combination of face mounting a pigment print to plexiglass with paint and UV cured pigment on top of the plexiglass allows the viewer to engage with the image in an unexpected way. The layering effect created by the combination of printing and mounting creates a window into the body of the dress form. Depth is created by sandwiching a pigment print of the dress between the plexiglass and Dibond panel. Custom color maple frames compliment both the black and white works of art.
Murphy lived and worked in Brooklyn, NY, Charlottesville, VA and Atlanta, GA. He is represented by Johnson Lowe Gallery.
Voyager is on view until November 29th 2025.
